Middlesbrough 1-3 Scunthorpe United
Report from the Riverside Stadium

The Iron's second string side made it two wins in a row with a 3-1 totesport.com Cup victory at Middlesbrough on Tuesday.

United got off to a decent start against their North East counterparts, with a lot of possession in the hosts' half of the pitch.

However, Boro took the lead against the run of play on 33 minutes as Andrew Halliday rounded off a fine move with a great finish, curling in left-footed from just inside the area.

Marvin Emnes almost notched a second with a low drive from 20 yards fizzing just wide.

Scunthorpe levelled soon after though as Martyn Woolford struck an effort from the left-hand side of the area, which hit Conor Ripley's right-hand post.

The rebound was picked up by Bobby Grant, who thrashed the ball into the back of the net.

The former Accrington man struck wide moments later
before Scunthorpe took the lead entering injury time as Trent McClenehan cracked a powerful drive into the back of the net.

Andrew Wright almost added a third just after the break, but he dragged a low right-footed shot just wide.

Slocombe was next in action as he made a terrific save to tip over a thunderbolt from the Dutchman Emnes.

Nevertheless, United's superiority was turned into another goal on 74 minutes as the ball was picked up by Grant.

He had time to set up Matthew Godden, who smashed the ball into the back of the net.
