ADKINS BUZZING AFTER OWLS WIN

Posted on: Wed 25 Aug 2010

Manager Nigel Adkins was beaming after seeing his side comfortably defeat League One pacesetters Sheffield Wednesday in the Carling Cup second round on Tuesday night.

Michael Collins' spectacular strike just before half-time set the scene, before Chris Dagnall added a second moments after the break.

Michael O'Connor made it three from the penalty spot after Richard Hinds was sent off for felling Jonathan Forte, before Marcus Tudgay pulled one back with a spot-kick for the Owls.

Dagnall headed in a fourth to seal the result, before the Owls pulled another back through Neil Mellor.

Adkins told The Iron Player: "It was a fantastic game of football wasn't it?

"We played some really good football, passed the ball about and created opportunities.

"We scored four and could have had more.

"Michael Raynes had three good headers from set-plays that he came close with.

"Eddie Nolan had a shot that hit the upright - that was a great effort.

"I was really pleased with Michael Collins.

"That was his first start. He's found it challenging since joining the football club but he started on the night and scored a great goal at half-time to justifiably put us in the lead.

"I thought we played some exceptional football and passed the ball around really well.

"In the second half Chris Dagnall scored two great goals, and Michael O'Connor notched from a penalty.

"We played really well and created numerous opportunities.

"We've got a few injuries at this moment in time but the lads out there have worked their socks off for the club tonight and deserve every credit."
