United were beaten 1-0 in their pre-season friendly at York City on Tuesday night.
Richard Brodie's superb free-kick three minutes from time flew into the back of the net to hand the Blue Square Premier outfit victory.
The Iron, wearing their new black and yellow away kit for the first time, tried to press from the start, with
Jonathan Forte - on fire in Saturday's win over Sheffield Wednesday - having an early shot blocked.
He then worked his way into position to fire a shot goalwards which Knight easily saved.
Around 20 minutes in, Forte latched on to a Nolan throughball but the goalkeeper was quickly out the box to dispel any threat.
Bobby Grant then sent a ball across goal and marginally wide as the visitors continued to push for the opener.
The best chance of the game so far came in the 23rd minute when Michael Rankine, formerly of the Iron, powered a header wide from Chris Carruthers' cross.
Two minutes later, Grant clipped an effort over the crossbar from 25 yards.
In the 30th minute, Forte raced on to another Nolan ball but his shot was tipped wide by the goalkeeper
Just before the break, Grant received the ball from
Cliff Byrne on the right and curled in a shot which the City shotstopper got down well to save.
At the break,
David Mirfin came on for
Rob Jones, and Woolford had their next chance - combining with Grant, before firing in a low shot which the goalkeeper swept up easily.
Three more changes followed, with
Matt Godden,
Adam Boyes and
Rory Coleman replacing
Martyn Woolford,
Jonathan Forte, and
Eddie Nolan who limped off after a challenge on the left flank.
The hosts started to come more into the match, and Jonathan Smith's header drew a great stop from Slocombe in the 65th minute.
Soon after, Godden drew a stop from Knight with a low right-footed effort after Boyes slipped him through. Then, Coleman's delivery from the left was headed over by Mirfin.
As the game drew to a climax, City substitute Brodie curled a shot goalwards which Slocombe saved well. Afterwards, after a corner was only partly cleared, Thompson hooked a volley over the bar.
There was action at both ends, and James Meredith fizzed a low drive wide for the Minstermen from the left hand side of the area with 10 minutes remaining.
Then, late on, Boyes headed over from Byrne's right-wing cross.
York had the last word, however, when Brodie's stinging free-kick flew into the back of the net from 25 yards.
There were two minutes of additional time but United, despite forcing a couple of corners, couldn't find that killer touch in the box to seal a draw.
The Iron are next in pre-season action on Saturday when they host Huddersfield Town (3.00pm kick-off).
