COLLINS ADJUSTING WELL

Posted on: Mon 26 Jul 2010

New midfield signing Michael Collins feels he's getting fitter and fitter as he adjusts to life as an Iron player.

The former Republic of Ireland U21 international joined Scunthorpe from Huddersfield three weeks ago, and - after missing the first friendly at Bottesford because he had blisters - he has played in the last three pre-season matches.

So far, United hold a 100 per cent record in those games and, while manager Nigel Adkins has downplayed the importance of getting results from the warm-up games, Collins thinks it does much to inspire confidence.

"It's another game on the step towards Reading, two weeks today," he told The Iron Player.

"It was a pleasing result, which is always important - regardless of the fact it's just a friendly because it inspires confidence.

"Winning isn't essential but, as footballers, winning breeds confidence.

"It doesn't matter whether that's in a friendly or as eleven versus eleven in training.

"It's important you get that winning mentality early like we have today.

"As the manager says though, it's important he looks at all the options he has available to him.

"It benefits us in the long run."

Speaking about his time as a Scunthorpe player so far, Collins added: "I'm really enjoying it.

"I've only been at one club throughout my career so it's a totally different scenario for me coming to Scunthorpe.

"I feel I've integrated with the lads superbly though and the manager has been a great help.

"I'm really enjoying it though. I just want to play as many games as I can and put in performances that people are pleased with.

"Championship football is a big step-up for me, but it's one I'm looking forward to.

"I've always wanted to test myself at the highest possible level and this is a great chance for me."
