Iron manager Nigel Adkins had special praise for striker Jonathan Forte after he scored the winner in Saturday's 1-0 home pre-season victory over Sheffield Wednesday.

The ex-Sheffield United man made it three goals in two pre-season games with a well-taken finish, and shone against the League One newcomers.

Adkins believes there is more to come from the 23-year-old too.

He told The Iron Player: "I was pleased with Jonathan Forte and the way he performed, and hopefully he can now he's got an opportunity to show what he's got, and what I believe he's got.

"He just needs that consistent run of games now.

"He's got it, he does it every day in training. He just needs a run playing.

"Has he been cast in the shadow of Martin Paterson, Paul Hayes and Gary Hooper? Probably yes.

"He's still a young lad, but hopefully he can extract all that potential he's got and bring it to the party for us this season."

Adkins was happy with the way his side performed in the success over the Owls, with his side making it four wins from four games as they edge nearer to the season start in two weeks' time at Reading.

"I felt it was good for both sides," continued Adkins.

"Sheffield Wednesday have a strong group of players who have all sampled Championship experience, and they would be expected to get back to that level by winning promotion this season.

"It was a good work-out on a hot day.

"A lot of players got some good game time under their belt.

"As well as Jonathan Forte, I was delighted with Chris Dagnall too.

"We had Martyn Woolford on one side, and Garry Thompson on the other, and started the game with a front four that will give plenty of problems with pace, power and guile.

"I felt the two centre-backs did ever so well.

"I don't think Rob Jones or David Mirfin missed a header. They looked soild and composed.

"All the players had a good hour at least."
