The Iron emerged 3-0 victors from their pre-season friendly at Winterton Rangers on Saturday.

It means three pre-season victories from three for Nigel Adkins' men, who won through goals from Chris Dagnall, Matt Godden and Bobby Grant.

The game got off to a slow start but it was the away team who looked most likely to score in the first half.

Rob Jones headed wide from a Michael O'Connor delivery, while Martyn Woolford then glanced a header past the post following Rory Coleman's cross.

O'Connor then very nearly gave his team the lead when the home shotstopper let the Northern Ireland international's powerful shot squirm underneath him before retrieving it.

Danny Frost came close for the hosts midway through the first half, cutting inside and firing in a shot which Joe Murphy got down well to stop.

On the subsequent counter-attack, Michael Collins' effort bounced off the crossbar to the relief of the hosts. Coleman then shot over shortly after.

Dagnall gave the away team the lead in the 38th minute, showing a real predator's instinct to latch on to a loose ball after Martyn Woolford's powerful strike had been tipped out. The former Rochdale man duly converted for his first goal in claret and blue.

Sam Togwell could have doubled the advantage before half-time but his shot was tipped wide of the mark.

Then, just before the break, Collins' strike drew another stop from the home goalkeeper.

There were eight changes at the break, with Jim McNulty coming on for his second debut since rejoining on loan from Brighton and Hove Albion.

The first chance of the second half saw Woolford try to clip an effort over the goalkeeper but it went over the bar.

Substitute Godden made it two in the 57th minute, firing home a well taken effort from the left-hand side of the area after good work from Collins had drawn out the goalkeeper. The former Brigg loanee cut inside before curling the ball into the back of the net off a post for his second goal in two games.

Shortly after, Eddie Nolan found Adam Boyes in space in the box. The former York forward spun on the ball and sent a lofted left-footed shot across the goal but wide.

Andrew Wright sent a shot just wide of goal, and substitute Bobby Grant teed up Coleman, reintroduced into the game late on in place of Togwell, whose effort from 25 yards hit the crossbar.

The ball was sent back into the area and Godden forced a handball from a Winterton defender, so Grant stepped up to send the goalkeeper, who managed to get a touch with his foot, the wrong way and seal a 3-0 success for Nigel Adkins' side.
