BOSS HAILS FIGHTBACK

Posted on: Sun 02 May 2010

Iron manager Nigel Adkins praised his side after a second-half fightback saw them draw 2-2 with Nottingham Forest at Glanford Park on Sunday.

Joe Garner gave the hosts the lead early in the first half, before George Boyd added a second just before half-time.

Niall Canavan levelled soon after the break, and they managed to find that elusive equaliser in the 87th minute when Thompson let fly with a rocket of a shot that flew into the top corner of the net.

"What a fantastic goal by Garry Thompson," said Adkins, speaking on The Iron Player.

"I felt in the first 35 minutes we did very well, although I was disappointed with the goal because we backed off Joe Garner and allowed him an easy roll into the net.

"I felt their goal just on half-time was great though, especially with the inter-linking play.

"To go in two goals down at half-time was disappointing but the troops rallied and kept going.

"It was great to see Niall Canavan get on the scoresheet from a corner, and Garry Thompson's finish was top drawer.

"We gave the supporters yet again something to cheer about and finished off the season the right way.

"It was nice that a lot of supporters stayed and the players were able to walk around the pitch and show their appreciation.

"It's just capped what, for me, has been a fantastic season."

A number of players are out of contract and the boss reluctantly accepted that some might depart the club during the summer.

He added: "We've been working very hard since our safety was secured on trying to keep the players here.

"The players have achieved in the Championship and there are clubs with far greater resources than us who can give them greater rewards.

"But I know this football club has done everything it can with the finances we have and has pushed the boat out as far as possible.

"They've served the football club well, and have earned the right to try and get the best deal they can for themselves.

"We wish them well with that. They know they're welcome here but we know we have to get ourselves ready for next season. Things aren't going to drag all the way through the summer."
