Iron manager Nigel Adkins wants his side to play entertaining, winning football at Doncaster Rovers on Saturday.United head into their final away game of the campaign knowing that their Championship place for next season is secure, and with that does Adkins feels he has had a weight lifted off his shoulders?
"Very much so, believe you me," he replied, speaking on
The Iron Player.
"Now we're assured we're in the Championship next season we can enjoy the next two games, knowing we want to win them because we want to finish as high as we can.
"There won't be that nervousness hanging over the result.
"Doncaster are an excellent footballing side.
"I've got a lot of time for their manager Sean O'Driscoll. They are a side who play some fantastic football and I'm sure it will be a great game at the weekend.
"We try and put an entertaining product on and the fans have two more games to enjoy.
"We want to win, and I hope the fans can sing and shout and enjoy the occasion."
There were joyous scenes at
Glanford Park on Tuesday night after the Iron secured their safety with a dramatic 2-2 draw against Reading, and Adkins is full of admiration for his players and staff.
He added: "We are all very proud that Scunthorpe United will be in the Championship again next season.
"I am very happy for the chairman for all the work that he and the board of directors have put in.
"I'm delighted for the players because the work rate they put in and the effort they show day-in day-out, week-in week-out has been phenomenal.
"At the end of the season we will look back at the campaign - we've had good weeks and bad weeks but the players have shown magnificent spirit and they have been led by fantastic coaching staff -
Andy Crosby,
Ian Baraclough,
Kevin Pressman and
Alex Dalton.
"We all work extremely hard and we're delighted with what we've achieved.
"Sometimes you don't realise what you've got until it's not there, and when the special moments do arrive you have to make the most of them.
"A lot of emotion was let off at the end of the game and it was a great accomplishment for everybody at Scunthorpe United.
"We had a very short close season after winning promotion in the League One play-off final at Wembley.
"We didn't get much of a break before we got back in again and that took its toll because it's been a long, hard demanding season.
"We got to the fourth round of both cup competitions so that meant we were effectively playing Saturday-Tuesday for the whole campaign.
"To do what we have done at the level we're at competitively is physically and mentally draining.
"We've had some defeats and it's about how you respond to that, and the lads deserve all the credit they will and should get.
"It's fantastic we've shown that, if everybody pulls together, a smaller club can achieve at this level.
"Next season we will be classed as one of the favourites for relegation again but we have to try and build on the platform we've got.
"Can we improve the training facilities, the stadium and the players? We want to gradually improve what we have without putting ourselves in financial jeopardy. We won't get in trouble here because we're well managed by the chairman.
"You have to cut your cloth accordingly and play the cards you've been given as best as you can."
