Scunthorpe United v Plymouth Argyle
at Glanford Park
Saturday, March 20, 2010 - 3.00pm
Saturday's home encounter with Plymouth Argyle is the first of two crunch clashes for the Iron at the bottom of the Championship.
Sitting in the bottom three following three straight away defeats, United are on home turf for the first time in three and a half weeks and will be gunning for all three points when they host Paul Mariner's Pilgrims, who are also positioned in the relegation zone.
It will be a day for big characters as Scunthorpe bid to climb away from trouble. They then entertain bottom-placed Peterborough United on Tuesday night.
Plymouth head into the fixture buoyed by a 3-2 success over Bristol City on Tuesday night, and they are five points from safety so will also be hungry for the win.
Iron manager Nigel Adkins made a number of changes for Wednesday night's trip to runaway league leaders Newcastle United, so people like Matt Sparrow, Sam Togwell and Martyn Woolford, who didn't start at St James' Park, could receive a run-out.
Michael O'Connor and Paul Hayes were substituted once the game against the Magpies became out of reach so also look set to start.
David Mirfin missed out with a groin injury and Adkins will be hoping that a key defender will be back for such an important game.
Gary Hooper has missed the last two matches with a groin problem of his own, and it is also vital that United get their leading goalscorer fit for the encounter with the Pilgrims.
Marcus Williams (groin) and Josh Wright (toe) picked up injuries at Newcastle and appear to be big doubts, with worries that the latter had broken a bone now eased after an x-ray revealed it to be just bruising.
Cliff Byrne serves the second of a five match suspension, while Ben May is also out, with Saturday's game being the last of his three-match ban.
Defender Richard Eckersley, on loan from Plymouth, returns from a groin injury and could feature against the Iron.
On-loan Fulham goalkeeper David Stockdale (shin) was in the 3-2 midweek win over Bristol City and did not train on Thursday so Romain Larrieu is on standby.
Winger Craig Noone (knee) is ruled out.
Anthony Taylor from Cheshire is the referee for the game.
