ONE LAPSE COST US - ADKINS
Posted on: Sat 13 Mar 2010
Iron manager Nigel Adkins was disappointed to see his side lose 1-0 to Ipswich Town through a stoppage time Connor Wickham goal.
The young striker struck the decisive blow while both sides were down to ten men - following the dismissals of Cliff Byrne and Damien Delaney - and it was something that frustrated Adkins, whose side looked like claiming a vital point.
As a result of the defeat, they now sit in the relegation zone for the first time since the opening day of the season.
"I said before the game that Ipswich were a very good side," said Adkins, speaking on The Iron Player.
"I saw them against Cardiff City in midweek and they play at a high tempo and are a massive threat from set-pieces.
"I make no apologies for the gameplan we had today. We tried to control the tempo and get a result.
"In some of our previous away games, for example Leicester. the game was out of sight after half an hour.
"I wanted to make sure that didn't happen here because I felt we had a chance on the counter-attack.
"Fantastic saves were made from efforts by Matt Sparrow and Paul Hayes.
"The performance was one in which we had a good sold shape about ourselves.
"We had to defend resolutely.
"The disappointing thing is that one lapse of concentration in the 92nd minute cost us a point."
