IT WAS A POOR DEFEAT - ADKINS

Posted on: Sun 28 Feb 2010

Manager Nigel Adkins was disappointed with his side's performance after Scunthorpe were beaten 2-1 by Coventry City at the Ricoh Arena on Saturday afternoon.

After a first half in which the hosts were on top, they went ahead early in the second period through Jon Stead.

Leon Barnett brought down Gary Hooper in the penalty area soon after, with the defender sent off. However, the Iron marksman's spot-kick was saved.

Sammy Clingan scored a superb free-kick midway through the half, which would ultimately prove the match-winner.

Substitute Grant McCann pulled a late goal back for United but it wasn't to be - with the North Lincolnshire side not in action again for a fortnight now.

"It was a missed chance for us," said Adkins, speaking on The Iron Player.

"I felt sorry for the supporters because we weren't at the races in the first half.

"It was a poor game on a heavy pitch.

"We played on Tuesday night on a heavy pitch and did so again today. We just weren't at the races at all.

"In the second half we were much better.

"We could have had a penalty right at the start and their player should arguably have been sent off, but it wasn't given.

"They then scored a goal. I've not seen the video so can't comment fully but Joe Murphy was telling the referee about an offside player being in his line of sight.

"The referee reluctantly gave us a penalty, booking Leon Barnett for the second time so he was subsequently sent off.

"The goalkeeper made a good save from Gary Hooper and Paul Hayes fired wide the rebound.

"We then brought on two wingers to make the pitch bigger, and Grant McCann came on.

"I felt we looked a lot better from that point, and Grant scored an excellent goal from a Garry Thompson cross.

"Sammy Clingan's free-kick went over the top of the wall, which is a difficult skill.

"The first half was poor and in the second half we had chances that were not taken. It was a poor defeat."
