JACKIE BROWNSWORD MEMORIAL

Posted on: Mon 22 Feb 2010

The Board of Directors have spent some time deliberating the best way to provide a memorial to Jackie Brownsword. The suggestions put forward by fans have been very helpful.

What would be most appropriate, and almost certainly would be welcomed by the majority of our supporters, would be a Bronze Statue. Unfortunately the cost is likely to be prohibitive.

The naming of the access road which is in our ownership (i.e from the welcome to Scunthorpe United arch) is a relatively simple process, but the Board prefer to name the entire road from the Tesco roundabout and this will require approval from North Lincolnshire Council. We have had preliminary discussions with the council and they do not envisage any problems, but first we must consult with the owners and occupiers of the adjacent premises.

If the naming of the road is approved, we could then begin a campaign to raise money to place a bronze statue, possibly as the centre piece of the Tesco roundabout, or at the centre of the mini island by the entrance to Glanford Park. Alternatively, a position more accessible to the supporters might be preferable. The club would make a worthwhile donation and North Lincolnshire Council might be persuaded to do likewise, with any balance being sought from supporters and local businesses. Of course, to site a statue on the council property would require their approval, but we feel it would be something rather special for Scunthorpe as a whole, and not just for the supporters of our football club.

The Chairman has met with Queenie Brownsword and she has given her full support to our proposals. When asked whether she preferred Jack or Jackie, she said it was only the supporters who referred to him as Jackie, but she didn't mind if it was "THE JACKIE BROWNSWORD WAY" it would be interesting to know if fans have a preference.

The whole process will take a little time, but we will progress as quickly as possible.
