ADKINS' PENALTY WOE

Posted on: Sat 16 Jan 2010
United manager Nigel Adkins felt his team should have been handed a penalty in the final minute of stoppage time as they drew 1-1 with Cardiff City at Glanford Park.

Scunthorpe led for most of the game through Michael O'Connor's superb free-kick but Peter Whittingham's 82nd minute shot, which took a deflection of David Mirfin and looped over Josh Lillis, secured a point for the visitors.

Adkins was disappointed that his team didn't have the chance to make it three points late on, however, as Jonathan Forte appeared to be brought down by visiting goalkeeper David Marshall in the third minute out of three of stoppage time.

"We were not happy with the goal we let in at the end, for it to loop over Josh Lillis was very unfortunate for us," said Adkins, speaking on The Iron Player.

"We were also disappointed with the free-kick that led to the ball been sent in. It shouldn't have been given, it was never a free-kick anyway and that allowed them to get bodies forward like they try to do quite a lot. They managed to scramble something from that.

"Did the goalkeeper make contact with Jonathan Forte in the last minute? Yes he did, so is that a penalty or not?

"The fact is he made contact with the player as he touched the ball away from the goalkeeper. He was unbalanced and then fell over.

"In the first half we looked bright, we had an energy about ourselves and took the game to Cardiff.

"We got on the front foot and moved the ball around well. The first half was very enjoyable and we played at a good tempo.

"There were a lot of things that we worked on in training this week that paid off.

"The team we were playing beat us 4-0 on the first day of the season and our performance showed how well we've progressed this year.

"I was pleased with one point but disappointed we couldn't get all three."

Meanwhile, Adkins confirmed after the game that the club aren't going to sign Steve MacLean, as falsely reported in the Scottish press on Saturday morning.

He also confirmed that Joe Murphy was fit to play but he selected Lillis because he felt the 'stopper deserved to keep his place following his impressive recent form.
