DEFENDING LET US DOWN - NIGEL

Posted on: Sun 22 Nov 2009

Iron boss Nigel Adkins was critical of his team's first half defending following their 3-0 defeat at Watford.

A quick-fire brace from Heidar Helguson put the hosts in the ascendency before Danny Graham finished United off early in the second half.

"We were very disappointed with the goals that we gave away," said Adkins, speaking on The Iron Player.

"Goals change games and we knew that Watford were a good side - a team who are very lively and industrious in the middle of the park.

"We had (Watford midfielder) Henri Lansbury with us last season so we knew all about him. I felt they were an excellent attacking force and we came away from home to try and nullify that as best as possible.

"We had chances to score in the first half - Paul Hayes had a couple of opportunities and Sam Togwell came close too.

"But when you can't defend a simple ball into the six yard box you're not going to win games of football.

"The two goals that we gave away in the first half were very poor from our point of view."

The manager refused to single out individual performances, adding: "We're a team and for us to achieve what we want to we have to be united."
