SHARP APOLOGISES ABOUT CELEBRATION

Posted on: Mon 28 Sep 2009

Former Iron striker Billy Sharp has said sorry to Scunthorpe's fans about the way he celebrated scoring his first goal for Doncaster Rovers in Saturday's 2-2 draw at Glanford Park.

The 23-year-old powered home a header in the 60th minute to put his side two goals ahead before United struck back.

He will go down in Scunthorpe United folklore after striking 56 goals in two seasons between 2005 and 2007 and breaking the club's goalscoring record as he helped them win the League One title in his final campaign at the club.

However, he was booed by home followers after charging towards the Rovers fans and whipping his shirt off in celebration.

Sharp defended his actions before apologising to Iron supporters.

Speaking on The Iron Player, Sharp said: "It was my first goal for Donny. I didn't want to celebrate but I was getting some stick from the fans.

"I don't mind that but I didn't think I deserved it and I was just giving some back.

"Obviously they didn't take it the right way.

"I love the fans here, they were brilliant with me while I was here for two years.

"It was nothing against them; I was just enjoying the fact that I scored.

"I'd not scored for a bit so I was just delighted that I had scored.

"You know you're going to get booked if you take your shirt off. It was just heat of the moment, I was happy to get the goal and disappointed that we didn't get the win.

"I don't think I would have done that if it had been at the other end.

"I had two of my best seasons here and might not have seasons like that again, but I'd like to apologise to the fans.

"It was just a bit of banter as they were giving me a lot of stick. But if they want me to apologise - then I'm happy to say sorry now."
