Iron manager Nigel Adkins was very pleased to see his team get past League Two outfit Port Vale and book their place in the Carling Cup third round with a 2-0 injury.United needed extra time to see off the defiant Valiants, with
Paul Hayes and
Grant McCann striking the decisive goals.
For the first time in the club's history they have reached the fourth round of the competition, and the overall performance truly satisfied Adkins.
"It's a historic day, with an excellent performance and result," said Adkins, speaking on
The Iron Player .
"We played some great football and I felt we entertained the supporters. We had a fluidity to pass the ball about and everyone had a smile on their faces.
"We're through to the fourth round of the Carling Cup for the first time in the club's history.
"We had to give the supporters an extra half hour of passing the ball around and entertainment.
"The stats from our analysts show we had 41 attempts at goal and I thought we gave them something to enjoy.
"Honestly, I said to the lads in the dug-out at the end of the 90 minutes that there would be a goal at the start of extra time and we got that through
Paul Hayes.
"Low and behold it hit his backside and went in the back of the net and it's his goal wihout a shadow of a doubt. He was the last man it touched.
"And there was a superb passage of inter-linking play for Grant McCann's goal.
"There were numerous outstanding performances and we kept a clean sheet."
