CHARACTER PLEASES ADKINS

Posted on: Fri 31 Jul 2009
Iron boss Nigel Adkins was delighted with the character shown by his team as they clinched the Lincolnshire Senior Cup for the third year running.

They came back from a goal down, with Ben May notching the equaliser in stoppage time, to take the match to a penalty shoot-out, which Scunthorpe subsequently won.

It were those battling qualities which epitomised United's season last year as they won promotion to the Championship.

"It was a great to see us battle back and show such great character," he told The Iron Player.

"It is very good that we've managed to retain the Cup - that is what we were after.

"We want a winning mentality and we've shown that again with how we've got this result.

"When you give a sloppy goal away it's always difficult to get back into it, but we managed that eventually and took the game to penatlies.

"Credit to Lincoln, they had a young team out. We've been able to put our young players out as well - it's all about development and, overall, I'm very pleased that we've retained this cup."
