Scunthorpe won 4-2 on penalties to claim their third successive Lincolnshire Senior Cup success - clinching the trophy for the 19th time.

That came after the Iron drew 1-1 in normal time, with substitute Ben May equalising in the dying moments.

It had looked like Andy Hutchinson's bizarre goal midway through the opening half had sealed the cup for the Imps.

United had plenty of chances to score in the opening half and it seemed they couldn't build on that in the second.

Nevertheless, May was there deep into stoppage time to prod home and his side then won on penalties.

Manager Nigel Adkins named a number of fringe players for the game.

Josh Lillis started the clash, with Andrew Wright, Niall Canavan, Jake Picton and Rory Coleman forming the defence.

The midfield consisted of Kevan Hurst, captain Sam Togwell, Josh Wright and Peter Winn, while Garry Thompson partnered Adam Boyes in attack.

The substitutes were Sam Slocombe, Matt Sparrow, Jonathan Forte, May and Andy Crosby.

Ex-United goalkeeper Paul Musselwhite, who enjoyed two spells with the club, lined up in goal for City. He is now their goalkeeping coach.

Scunthorpe were looking to win the tournament for the third year in succession, and faced the team who beat them the last time they lost the final - two years ago when City recorded a 1-0 victory at Sincil Bank through Jamie Forrester's goal.

The Iron were presented with an early chance when Boyes turned and curled in a shot which cleared Musselwhite's crossbar.

There was then an early change as Thompson was replaced by Forte in attack. Thompson had come off moments earlier to receive treatment.

Josh Wright had a superb chance on 15 minutes when his curled free-kick crashed back into play off the crossbar. Canavan tried to head home the rebound but it went just wide.

The crafty Wright almost created another chance when he played Forte through, but the forward was beaten to the ball by Musselwhite.

However, it was to be the Imps who took the lead with their first chance. The ball was headed back to Lillis, whose clearance hit Hutchinson and he followed it up into the back of the away net.

They then had the next opportunity, as Stefan Oakes' free-kick from the left was headed into the arms of Lillis by Danny Hone.

Josh Wright and Hurst linked up well moments later too, when the former played through the latter with a short free-kick only for the subsequent shot to fizz wide of Musselwhite's right-hand post.

Picton headed wide from a Hurst corner soon later as the visitors searched for an equalising goal.

After decent work from Forte, Hurst then clipped an effort into the arms of Musselwhite.

Then, just one minute before the break, Togwell's header drew a good stop from the former Hull man.

The Imps started the second half well and could have doubled their lead when Hutchinson turned to volley over the bar from just inside the area.

Lillis made a sensational stop 14 minutes into the second period when Oakes' free-kick threatened to sneak in at his left-hand post.

There was soon a second Scunthorpe change, as Forte was brought off to be replaced by Sparrow.

United continued to threaten but weren't creating as many clear-cut chances as they did in the opening period, as the Imps coped well with what was thrown at them.

The Iron made a further change 10 minutes from time when May added more firepower to the attack by coming on for Winn.

Despite the ball being in the final third for the majority of the second half though it didn't look like that elusive goal was going to come.

Indeed, it could have gone Lincoln's way when Hutchinson dragged an effort just wide of goal on 89 minutes.

However, deep into four minutes of stoppage time the visiting side did level, as May bundled home the levelling goal from close range after a scramble following Togwell's long throw.

Boyes could have won the match seconds later but he shot over the crossbar from close range, and the game ended up going to penalties, with the order of goals and misses as follows:

1 - Scunthorpe - Togwell - Goal

2 - Lincoln - Oakes - Miss

3 - Scunthorpe - May - Goal

4 - Lincoln - Hutchinson - Goal

5 - Scunthorpe - Sparrow - Miss

6 - Lincoln - Miller - Miss

7 - Scunthorpe - Coleman - Goal

8 - Lincoln - Coleman-Carr - Goal

9 - Scunthorpe - Hurst - Goal

* United won 4-2 on penalties and captain Togwell triumphantly lifted the cup.

The Iron are next in friendly action on Saturday when they host Brighton and Hove Albion.
