PREVIEW: LINCOLN CITY (A)

Posted on: Thu 30 Jul 2009

Scunthorpe are back in pre-season action on Thursday night when they visit Lincoln City for the final of the Lincolnshire Senior Cup at Sincil Bank (7.30pm kick-off).

Due to competition rules, only three substitutes can be used, so at least eight players will receive a 90-minute run-out on Thursday.

Manager Nigel Adkins is keeping his selection options close to his chest, but he named one of his strongest sides for the semi-final at Grimsby Town 10 days ago and he may do so again.

Left-back Marcus Williams will be hoping to play after recovering from tendonitis in his Achilles, while striker Gary Hooper could also be in line for an appearance after being rested for the 1-1 draw at Gainsborough on Tuesday.

Andrew Wright and Jonathan Forte missed that match with knocks and are likely to sit this one out too, although - should he be passed fit - Wright could be played at right-back with Cliff Byrne moved into the centre as Adkins tests out central defensive options ahead of the season opener at Cardiff a week on Saturday.

Definitely out is David Mirfin, who is suffering from a swollen knee, and Kenny Milne will continue to be nursed through pre-season.

They come up against Peter Jackson's Lincoln side, who will be hoping to make up for the disappointment of missing out on a play-off spot in League Two last term.

They have played two home friendlies so far, against an Arsenal Xi and Sheffield United and have lost them both, so the Imps will be keen to win the Lincolnshire Senior Cup and treat their fans to a home victory before the big kick-off.

They last won the 2007 trophy, defeating United 1-0 in stoppage time at Sincil Bank almost exactly two years ago.

Scunthorpe have won the tournament the last two seasons and will be looking to make it a treble.
