Striker Paul Hayes was naturally pleased to net two goals in Monday night's Lincolnshire Senior Cup semi-final win over Grimsby Town.He feels the team could have scored more but he was happy to receive a 90-minute work-out and take his tally for pre-season to three strikes.
Scunthorpe have managed to score 22 goals in their four games so far and the former Barnsley man feels it all bodes well for the new Championship campaign.
"I felt good," Hayes told
Iron World.
"A few of the lads were feeling tired, and everyone feels different in different games."
"I felt it went well for me though and I feel alright at the moment. It might be totally different tomorrow though," he smiled.
"In last week's matches we'd only played 45 minutes each so we knew going into this game that it would be a full 90 minutes and some of us would get tired.
"The game had a bit of an edge because it was against local rivals in a cup competition.
"You always want to win games when you are in cup competitions and we were delighted to come away with a 3-0 win.
"Forwards are judged on goals, and it was good that myself and
Gary Hooper got some goals.
"That's what we're in the team to do and we managed to do that at Grimsby.
"It was a really good test for us and I felt we did well going forward.
"But although we looked good I felt we were a bit sloppy at times.
"We know we've got a long way to go but we're getting there and I'm sure we'll be alright for the first game of the season."
