Brigg Town 0-12 Scunthorpe United
Report from the Hawthorns

Scunthorpe ran out 12-0 winners in their pre-season friendly at Brigg Town on Thursday night.

Gary Hooper notched a first half hat-trick from close range before Grant McCann added a fourth before the break with a free-kick.

Ben May netted five after the break, including a penalty, while Michael O'Connor, Peter Winn and Jake Picton also scored.

The Iron named Joe Murphy in goal for the first half, with Andrew Wright, Picton, Rob Jones and Rory Coleman forming the defence.

The midfield consisted of Garry Thompson, Josh Wright, McCann and Martyn Woolford, while Hooper partnered new signing Adam Boyes up front.

It was an even start, although the away team always looked a danger on the break.

The first real chance of the night came Boyes' way, when he latched on to Joe Murphy's long clearance and looped a volley just wide of goal.

It was Scunthorpe who opened the goalscoring on the 12-minute mark when Jones played a long ball through to Hooper, who took a touch before advancing on goal and firing past the onrushing goalkeeper.

Thompson headed over the crossbar after McCann's corner shortly after as the visitors looked to add to the score.

The Iron continued to be industrious going forward, although the hosts were dangerous in the early stages. The ball through to Hooper proved a popular option, as he tested the Brigg offside trap on numerous occasions.

Woolford linked up well with McCann and struck a low effort which Ben Simpson got down well to save. Shortly after, Hooper's cross was deflected just wide of goal by a Brigg defender.

Ben Simpson, the Zebras goalkeeper, had to be quick to stop Thompson from making it two after Woolford's throughball. A short while later, Woolford - who had swapped flanks with Thompson - drove in a shot which he had to tip out.

Thompson then drove wide after good work by Josh Wright, who surged forward.

Scunthorpe could have been three or four up by the half-hour mark, and Boyes curled over the crossbar after good attacking play by McCann.

Seven minutes from the interval though, Boyes won possession and played through Hooper, who beat the offside trap and rounded the goalkeeper before striking.

Just three minutes later he notched his third, as he was clipped through by Woolford and beat the last defender again before wrongfooting the goalkeeper and flicking home.

With the last kick of the first half McCann made it four, as he curled a free-kick in from 25 yards and beyond the grasp of Simpson.

The second half saw a different team, barring Picton, come onto the field. Sam Slocombe went in goal, with Cliff Byrne, Picton, Niall Canavan and Ian Morris lining up in defence.

The midfield was Kevan Hurst, O'Connor, Sam Togwell and Winn, while May played up front with Matt Godden.

And it didn't take long for May to get off the mark, as the unmarked ex-Millwall man headed in a cross from Hurst to make it five.

Scunthorpe won a penalty just moments later as Godden was felled in the penalty area, and May stepped up to send the goalkeeper the wrong way and notch his second.

O'Connor showed some class to dribble into the box and round the goalkeeper to add a seventh soon after as the Iron ran riot.

May notched his hat-trick goal in the 66th minute - connecting with Godden's cross to power in a header, which the goalkeeper touched but couldn't keep out.

It was a case of shoot and score for United, as they continually finished clinically - boding well for the new Championship season.

O'Connor limped off to be replaced by Matt Sparrow, with Paul Hayes the only unused substitute.

It was soon nine, as May latched onto a knockdown by Godden to rifle in. Then, minutes later, receiving the ball from Hurst, May craftilly turned to crash in the next goal.

Winn then thrashed home another in the 82nd minute, after Hurst's cross had only been partially cleared to the left-hand side of the penalty area.

Picton stooped to head in a corner in the closing stages as Scunthorpe made it twelve.

Their next game is the Lincolnshire Senior Cup semi-final at Grimsby Town on Monday night.
