A controlled performance in both halves saw the Iron run out 5-0 winners at Winterton Rangers on Tuesday night.

It was their second friendly of pre-season, and their second victory, as Nigel Adkins' side netted three late goals to seal the success.

Sam Togwell, back from a hernia injury, put his team ahead in the first half before Paul Hayes added a second soon after the interval.

Martyn Woolford notched the third before two strikes from Jonathan Forte, who also notched twice in the win at Bottesford on Saturday.

Josh Lillis started in goal for Scunthorpe, with captain Cliff Byrne, Jake Picton, Niall Canavan and Ian Morris forming the defence.

The midfield consisted of Garry Thompson, Matt Sparrow, Togwell and Kevan Hurst, while Ben May led the attack alongside Gary Hooper.

There was heavy rain before kick-off, but that cleared just as the game started.

May had the first meaningful attempt of the night for Scunthorpe, as he took the ball neatly on the edge of the area, and used his size to turn and pop a shot in the direction of the goal - but it was taken by the goalkeeper.

Hooper then had a shot deflected away after good work from Thompson as the visitors looked to impose themselves on the game.

May had another effort blocked after linking up well with Hooper as the pressure continued.

Hooper came close just before the half-hour mark but had his effort from an angle blocked by the goalkeeper as a dominant Iron looked to register the first goal.

He then shot over the crossbar just moments later after receiving the ball from Hurst as he looked to find his range.

On 35 minutes, however, Scunthorpe eventually went ahead as Thompson raced down the right and crossed for Togwell to tap home.

Just two minutes later, Hurst gave the ball to May, who headed across a crowded penalty area. It was knocked on, and then dropped for Hooper, who twisted on the spot, before sending a left-footed strike at goal. It was saved superbly by the Winterton goalkeeper, from what was almost point-blank range.

May then shot over the crossbar just before half-time, as the Iron changed their eleven men.

Joe Murphy was between the sticks, while Andrew Wright, debutant Rob Jones, David Mirfin, Rory Coleman lined up in defence.

The midfield lined up as Josh Wright, Michael O'Connor and Grant McCann, while Woolford and Forte supported Hayes in attack.

And it was the latter of those names who added the second goal. Jones' header from a McCann corner was blocked by the goalkeeper and fell into the feet of Hayes, who slotted home.

He then had the next chance, hammering wide of goal after a Woolford pass.

On 58 minutes, McCann's volley was then blocked by the Rangers 'stopper as the Iron looked to steam ahead. Woolford struck wide after good work from Forte shortly after.

The hosts struggled to muster much in attack and Hayes had the next meaningful chance, volleying wide.

After a scintilating run, which involved a wonderful one-two with Josh Wright, Woolford got his name on the scoresheet. He found himself just inside the area, and slid the ball beneath the Winterton 'keeper.

Forte had a shot saved before adding two goals of his own. He played a one-two with Josh Wright before calmly beating the goalkeeper.

He then struck after connecting with Coleman's cross from the left, and it proved to be the last meaningful chance of the game.
