A SEASON IN REVIEW - APRIL

Posted on: Mon 29 Jun 2009

The Iron had finished March in style and April began with a mouthwatering trip to Wembley Stadium for the final of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy.

United were set to face League Two's bottom club Luton Town in their third ever visit to the national stadium, and the first occasion since it had been redeveloped.

There was an exciting week of build-up as manager Nigel Adkins prepared his players thoroughly for what would be the biggest day of some of their careers so far.

They got all their usual pre-match media out of the way on the Monday and then concentrated all week on training and preparation for their Wembley date.

The game took place on Sunday, April 5 and United took an all-time record away following of more than 13,000 to London for the game. Luton managed to sell more than 38,00 tickets themselves and an electric atmosphere was in place for the match.

Scunthorpe took an early lead through Gary Hooper, who latched on to Paul Hayes' flick-on from Joe Murphy's long punt upfield and fired across goal and beyond Dean Brill.

The Hatters were causing problems of their own going forward and Chris Martin levelled in style as he fired past the onrushing Joe Murphy.

The Iron had plenty of chances but the next goal didn't arrive until the 70-minute mark, as Tom Craddock rifled in a low effort from the edge of the area - three quarters of the stadium erupted.

United were still in it though and pushed forward. Henri Lansbury hit the crossbar and it looked like it wasn't going to be Scunthorpe's day, until Grant McCann, three minutes from full-time, received the ball in space and curled a magnificent strike over Brill and into the back of the net.

The game entered extra time but, just six minutes into the first half, Claude Gnakpa chased a throughball and, under pressure from Marcus Williams, lobbed the ball over Murphy from just outside the penalty area.

The Iron kept looking for the winner but that proved to be the decisive goal of the game as Luton ran out 3-2 victors.

The players were feeling low after losing the match and manager Nigel Adkins gathered them all in a huddle on the Wembley pitch, telling his stars to bottle the experience of losing and use it seven weeks later in the League One play-off final, which the club were striving to reach.

It was a quiet, reflective week following the Wembley loss and attention switched back to the League One promotion chase.

Huddersfield Town visited Glanford Park for the first match after Wembley on Good Friday, and the Iron took and early lead through Martyn Woolford's thunderbolt.

The Terriers soon levelled through Tom Clarke and they took the lead just after half-time as Gary Roberts struck past Murphy for the match-winning goal.

Sitting seventh in the table again after this home defeat, it was vitally important that Scunthorpe bounced back in a tough-looking Easter Monday game at Hartlepool, facing a side fighting for their League One lives.

It was an inspired away display from Adkins' team though, as McCann gave them a lead in the opening minutes with a deflected free kick.

The Pools levelled through Michael Nelson soon after, but Hayes struck soon after the break after Hooper set him up.

Danny Nardiello equalised in the 77th minute but, just two minutes later, Hayes netted again as a Hooper shot rebounded into play off the post, hit him and crept in. It proved to be a vital winning strike as the Iron re-entered the top six.

There was a top of the table league clash with Milton Keynes Dons the following Saturday, but the Iron lost a poor game 1-0. Luke Chadwick netted in the first half and a second-half fightback from United couldn't provide the goal they needed.

There was an action-packed 3-3 draw at Northampton the following Tuesday.

Adkins' side went behind to Jason Crowe's goal but levelled in first half stoppage time through Liam Trotter's header.

McCann put the Iron ahead from the penalty spot straight after the restart, before Ikechi Anya equalised for the hosts on the hour mark.

Sparrow crashed his team back ahead with a superb strike but parity was restored again when Mark Hughes headed in with 15 minutes left.

This result meant United still stayed seventh, but they've closed the gap on sixth-placed Tranmere to just one point.

The next Friday saw them take on league champions Leicester City at the Walkers' Stadium, and they re-entered the top six on goal difference with a 2-2 draw.

Michael Morrison put the Foxes ahead in the opening period but Hayes sublimely levelled soon after the break.

McCann put Scunthorpe in the lead from the penalty spot but Morrison had the last say when he headed in the Foxes' equaliser.

The Foxes were crowned league winners after the game and their festivities left United hoping for something similar exactly a month to the day later.

Tranmere slipped up at home to Yeovil the following day, drawing 1-1, and the Iron made their game in hand at home to Cheltenham count the Tuesday after.

Hayes put the North Lincolnshire side ahead on 37 minutes and Cliff Byrne then added a second just three minutes later. It was the captain's first goal for three and a half years.

In truth, the Iron were always in control, and Henri Lansbury's super strike added a gloss to the scoreline midway through the second half.

United were back in the top six of the division after this success, and needed just a draw at Glanford Park at the weekend against Tranmere in their final game of the season to confirm their place in the play-offs. Could they do it?
