UNITED FANS URGED TO BACK THE WORLD CUP BID

Posted on: Tue 16 Jun 2009
Iron supporters are being urged to back the FA's bid to host the 2018 World Cup.

Fans are being asked to get behind the campaign by registering their support.

The following website - www.england2018bid.com - has full details of the bid, and a number of high profile figures have all encouraged it.

The English FA have ten rivals, however. Joint bids have come in from Spain and Portugal and the Netherlands and Belgium, in addition to Russia.

Australia, the United States, Mexico, Qatar and Indonesia are other nations in the running to stage the tournament.

England have been named as early favourites to host the tournament but Football Association chairman Lord Triesman believes only unity will see it happen.

"I am not going to start with the belief that we are favourites," he said.

"We have to demonstrate that we can win it on merit but very often it is the toughest competition that sharpens your game the most.

"I welcome this like I would welcome the kind of match between two clubs at the top of their game."
