MCCANN WILL RELISH UNDERDOG STATUS

Posted on: Mon 15 Jun 2009
Midfielder Grant McCann can't wait to have another crack at the Championship with Scunthorpe next season.

The Northern Ireland international joined in January last year and was part of the Iron team which suffered relegation.

He is confident his side will survive this time around though and believes they are capable of pushing on, and possess more quality in their squad than they did last time around.

"There are some massive teams in the division and we can't wait to play these teams," the ex-West Ham trainee told Iron World.

"Nobody gave us a chance really and there were comments in the national press last season that a club like Scunthorpe don't deserve to be in the Championship."

This time I hope we'll be more streetwise in games, because we lost a lot of matches by just the odd goal last time around and experience is always important.

"We can hopefully strengthen the squad we've got and have a good crack at it.

"It meant everything for this club to get back into the Championship. It really was an amazing experience."

The way promotion was secured in the League One play-off final against Millwall will always stay with McCann too.

The former Barnsley man added: "To go 2-1 down  and then come back like we did to win 3-2 is just an unbelievable achievement for everybody involved.

"It shows our strength of character because we always believed we could win the game.

"We went all out for it because we knew it was then or never."

Scunthorpe thrived on being underdogs at Wembley and there are sure to be numerous occasions next season when they will have that tag placed on them too.

"It's not very often you get promoted from League One on two straight occasions," continued the 10-goal playmaker.

"We have done amazingly to come straight back up again and can't wait for next season. It's just great for the club.

"Nobody gave us a chance really and there were comments in the national press last season that a club like Scunthorpe don't deserve to be in the Championship.

"In fact, on the morning of the play-off final, there was something derogatory in a national newspaper which we showed to all the lads at breakfast.

"It certainly gave us an extra incentive and something to prove.

"We know next season we'll have even more of that because of the size of the club but it will make us doubly determined to push on,"
