IRON SEEDED FOR CARLING CUP
Posted on: Mon 15 Jun 2009
United will be seeded in the first round draw of the Carling Cup.
The draw, to be revealed at 9.30am on Tuesday morning, will have 70 teams in the hat with 35 seeded clubs and 35 non-seeded sides.
The seeding is based on the final league positions of last season, meaning that fellow Championship new boys Middlesbrough and Newcastle United have been granted a bye to the second round.
Seeded teams are to be drawn against non-seeded teams on a northern/southern split basis.
There will be no chance of Scunthorpe taking on the likes of Sheffield Wednesday, Sheffield United, Doncaster Rovers or Barnsley, nor could there be a clash against Leeds United - however there are chances of the Iron taking on other fairly local sides, such as Grimsby Town, Lincoln City and Rotherham United.
Ties are set to be played on the week commencing Monday, August 10.
The full seeding list is as follows:
North - Seeded
Barnsley, Blackpool, Coventry City, Derby County, Doncaster Rovers, Huddersfield Town, Leeds United, Leicester City, Nottingham Forest, Oldham Athletic, Preston North End, Scunthorpe United, Sheffield United, Sheffield Wednesday, Tranmere Rovers, Walsall, West Bromwich Albion.
North - Non-seeded
Accrington Stanley, Bradford City, Bury, Carlisle United, Chesterfield, Crewe Alexandra, Darlington, Grimsby Town, Hartlepool United, Lincoln City, Macclesfield Town, Morecambe, Notts County, Port Vale, Rochdale, Rotherham United, Stockport County.
