United boss Nigel Adkins praised the impact made by strike duo Paul Hayes and Gary Hooper in his team's 2-1 loss to Leeds on Saturday.

"They certainly looked a good partnership," said Adkins, speaking on Iron World. "Their link up play was excellent and they showed great intelligence.

"The goal we scored was superb, and they were a thorn in the side for Leeds United.

"There was great delivery from both flanks too, we want to play with wingers and play an exciting expressive game of football but to do that you've got to get the ball first of all.

"That's why we were delighted with our shape in the first half, that allowed us to get the ball, but in the second half Leeds dominated.

"In the last half hour we lost our shape a little bit, and if you give a good team like Leeds half a chance to get some space they get an ascendency in the game, and that's exactly what happened.

"There were some great positives to take from the game, and it is a platform that we have given ourselves."

Adkins also had good things to say about Scottish centre-back Kenny Milnem a summer signing from Falkirk, who made his debut against the Whites on Saturday - picking up both man of the match awards.

He added: "He was very impressive, he's got a presence about himself and he did very well in that partnership with Izzy Iriekpen at the back."
