United manager Nigel Adkins is 'hopeful' that midfielder Grant McCann will be fully-fit for the season opener against Leeds United on Saturday.

The 27-year-old midfielder played a full 90 minutes in his team's 4-0 home Lincolnshire Senior Cup Final win against Grimsby Town, and Adkins was delighted with the way the former Barnsley man played.

He missed the first three games of pre-season with a foot injury, but has worked hard in training to make up for the lack of match practice so far.

"Grant got a full 90 minutes on Saturday, which was important," explained Adkins, speaking on Iron World.

"He missed ten days of the pre-season period with a foot injury.

"I've got high hopes for Grant. I think he's a quality player, the fans have seen that.

"He and Ian Morris did ever so well in the middle of the park on Saturday, and hopefully they will keep working hard.

"We've got a squad of players where everyone is fighting for positions and we'll just have to see how it goes."
