Captain Izzy Iriekpen says a win in the final friendly of pre-season against Grimsby Town is all-important as Scunthorpe look to go into next week's season opener against Leeds full of confidence.

The 26-year-old centre-back feels a strong 90 minutes from his team in the game, which is now also the Lincolnshire Senior Cup Final, would be the perfect tonic ahead of the visit of the Whites after back-to-back friendly defeats against Rotherham and Sheffield United.

"I think pre-season has gone okay," Iriekpen told Iron World. "The gaffer has got what he needed out of us.

"The new players have got used to us and we've got used to them. We've got Grimsby as a last game now and we need to get on the winning trail.

"It would definitely increase confidence going into Leeds. We need to play well for 90 minutes, we've played well in parts of games, but we need a result from Grimsby.

"It would be good for the team to get a few goals too. I think the strikers have been unlucky at the moment but once they get one they'll start flying in."
