Goalkeeper Josh Lillis isn't thinking long-term, but will strive to put on a show between the sticks for the Iron in the absence of injured stopper Joe Murphy.

The Republic of Ireland international is struggling with a groin problem and looks set to miss the start of the season a week on Saturday when Leeds United visit.

Lillis will deputise for him in the interim and hopes to show what he is capable of during that time.

The young custodian could have moved out on loan to an unnamed League Two club at the end of last week, but Murphy's injury saw the club put those plans on hold.

Lillis told Iron World: "I had a few phone calls and spoke to the gaffer (Nigel Adkins) to try and get something sorted.

"It was nearly done and then Joe pulled his groin in training, so I had to get my head around that.

"The gaffer has told me I will be No. 1 until further notice, so I'll just take it from there."

After playing 90 minutes against Sheffield United last week, he will get a final pre-season run-out in Saturday's Lincolnshire Senior Cup Final against Grimsby Town.

"It feels really good to be playing," Lillis added. "I've been sat on the bench now for two years and have gained experience from watching the games and making odd appearances.

"I think I'm ready, I'm not going to look beyond the first game of the season or Grimsby even. I'll just take the games as they come. Joe has been coming along well so we'll just have to see if he's fit to start or not, but if he isn't I'll be there ready for it.

"I just want to win games, do the best I can, and take the games as they come."
