Iron manager Nigel Adkins is determined to haul his side back into the Championship at the first attempt.

After relegation, Scunthorpe played their final game in the second tier against fellow demoted Colchester United on Sunday and drew 3-3 - extended their end-of-season unbeaten run to three games.

Adkins will have the players in on Wednesday to debrief the season and plans to announce his retained list later in the week.

Then the process of gathering a squad capable of having a crack at promotion from League One will begin, and it's a challenge the United chief is looking forward to.

Adkins, speaking on Iron World, said: "We've got to be positive, I'm not one to be knocked down and you have to keep getting yourself up again because people want to keep knocking you down

"From now on we're in League One and we're mounting a campaign to get promoted back to the Championship - that's the mind process now.

"We'll learn all the lessons from this season and we'll look forward to next year's campaign.

"It'll be a rollercoaster ride for all our supporters, and we'll give it our best shot."

A major positive from the last three games of the campaign has been the goalscoring form of the club's No. 9 Paul Hayes, who has netted five goals.

And he will play a major part in Adkins' plans next season.

"Paul Hayes is a fantastic football player," he added.

"But it's hard to maintain it for a full season. But it's really good that he has finished well so he can start next season well."
