SECOND STRING DRAW IN THRILLER

Posted on: Wed 19 Mar 2008

The Iron's reserves drew 3-3 against their Hartlepool United counterparts at Billingham Town on Wednesday afternoon.

And the home team needed a late leveller to ensure a share of the spoils after Tomi Ameobi looked to had won the match for Scunthorpe.

Josh Lillis was called into action in the opening minutes when he tipped out a left-footed effort from James Brown.

But it did not take long for Pools to go ahead when David Foley drilled past Lillis after a pass from Stephen Turnbull.

United were quick to respond though as Jonathan Forte raced onto a long ball and volleyed past Jan Budtz to make it 1-1.

They then made it two soon after when fellow attacker Peter Winn latched on to a throughball and neatly fired home.

Forte forced another save from Budtz as the Iron built a head of steam going forward.

The former Sheffield United man then fired wide, while Winn had an effort turned around the post as Scunthorpe finished the opening period strongly.

Hartlepool soon levelled after the restart though, as Brown received Neale McDermott's pass and clipped the ball over the onrushing Lillis.

The Iron goalkeeper then made a couple of notable saves from Matty Robson, tipping over a thunderbolt of an effort, and then pushing wide a low drive.

And, five minutes from time, the North Lincolnshire team thought they had won it. Forte advanced down the left and sent a low cross in for Ameobi, who side-footed home from close range.

It was not over yet though, and the Pools had the last say when Robson's shot sunk into the back of the net.
