IRON CLAIM LATE DRAW

Posted on: Thu 15 Nov 2007

United's reserve side drew 2-2 with their Leeds United counterparts at Glanford Park on Wednesday night.

The visitors went ahead through Gavin Rothery midway through the second-half, with the midfielder curling the ball past Josh Lillis from the edge of the area after good work from Alan Thompson, who was partnering fellow senior pro Shaun Derry in the centre of midfield.

However, Scunthorpe showed some resolve and got back into the game just prior to half-time with trialist Simon Ainge (below), a defender from Bradford City, heading home a corner at the far post to level affairs.

Leeds regained the lead in the second half when Tomi Ameobi latched onto a poor backpass to slot the ball past Josh Lillis.

United weren't out of it though and they earned a point through Daniel McBreen's equaliser.

The Australian forward stooped low to head past the Leeds goalkeeper from a near post cross.

It was an important result for the Iron, who had suffered heavy defeats against Sheffield Wednesday and York City in their last two matches.
