Iron manager Nigel Adkins is delighted with how central defender Niall Canavan has coped in his first season as a professional footballer.

The young Leeds-born player has come up through the club's youth ranks and appeared at Sheffield Wednesday and Swansea City this week.

"I have no hesitation about playing Niall," said Adkins, speaking on BBC Radio Humberside.

"He's done ever so well because he has been thrown in at the deeo end.

"But whenever a situation arises where there is a mistake from him, we'll get on to him because it's all about development.

"He missed training with a swollen ankle on Thursday, but hopefully that will come down and he will get on the training ground at some stage on Friday because I know he'll be desperate to play and get involved in the group.
