Scunthorpe United chairman Steve Wharton has hit back at critics who have accused him and the board of short-changing the Iron's Championship ambitions. He underlines his desire to establish United in the second tier of English football - just five years after almost being relegated from the Football League.

Scunthorpe United have revealed they planned to run at a loss in a gamble to gain promotion to the Championship. In a statement on the club's website, chairman Steve Wharton said that United budgeted to lose £750,000 in order to win promotion from League One.

Doncaster Rovers first local derby of the new Championship season will kick off at noon at the request of the police. Rovers travel to Glanford Park to take on newly promoted Scunthorpe United on Saturday, September 26.

United have missed out on signing midfielder Liam Trotter, the Telegraph has learned. The Iron had offered the out-of-contract 20-year-old (inset) a three year deal to make the move to Glanford Park, where he enjoyed a successful loan spell during the second half of last season.

Crewe may also have to consider offers for two of their players shortly as Derby County are tracking full-back John Brayford, and Scunthorpe United are sounding out the availability of Northern Ireland international midfielder Michael O'Connor.

Bristol Rovers are being linked with a move for Stockport County midfielder Dominic Blizzard. Rovers are understood to be keen on the former Watford player, but a string of other clubs are also thought to have been tracking him - including Championship outfits Blackpool and Scunthorpe, as well as the Pirates' League One rivals MK Dons and Huddersfield.

Scunthorpe United have now sold well over 3,000 season tickets for the new Championship campaign. And they are hoping that by the time the new term kicks off in just over five weeks time, they will be somewhere near a club record.
