United manager Nigel Adkins was left rueing defensive lapses as Scunthorpe were defeated 3-0 at Oldham on Tuesday night.

A hat-trick from Lewis Alessandra sealed the win for the hosts, who the Iron boss felt capitalised on an off day for the league leaders.

"We've talked about things in the dressing room, we're all bitterly disappointed," Adkins told BBC Radio Humberside.

"They were basic errors. I felt the front two for Oldham dominated the game - that is where it was won and lost.

"We'll learn the lessons collectively as a team, we've got a young group of players and we know they're all honest - they work ever so hard.

"But tonight, in the second half, we haven't done it. Credit to Oldham because they deserved the victory."
