MEDIA: ADKINS ON LEEDS AND AMERICAN STAR

Posted on: Tue 17 Jun 2008
United boss Nigel Adkins is looking forward to taking on Leeds United on the opening day of the new season.

The Iron kick off the new campaign with arguably their biggest game at Glanford Park, and Adkins can't wait to get started.

He told the Scunthorpe Telegraph: "What a magnificent game for us to kick-off the season" he declared.

"Leeds are the team that everyone will be tipping as favourites to be champions of League One.

"Gary McAllister's teams always try to play football. It should be a great spectacle for the fans.

"Looking down the fixture list, there are a lot of big games in there for us.

"League One is going to be tough this season - but we fancy our chances.

"We want to have a good season and be up their challenging for promotion back to the Championship.

"We have got the basis of a good squad which we are still looking to add to in one or two positions."

Speaking to BBC Radio Humberside, Adkins has admitted an interest in an American player from the MLS.

He is tracking a central midfielder, who could join during the January transfer window.

The manager watched him while on a family holiday in Los Angeles.

"I've made some good contacts with LA Galaxy and I watched a player out there," he told the station.

"When their season finishes in January there might be a possibility of bringing him to England.

"We're opening up avenues that can help Scunthorpe United Football Club.

"He'll have a British passport - he's an American guy married to an English girl so it's something to explore."

Adkins doesn't expect to make many more additions to his squad and has cooled his interest in Mansfield forward Michael Boulding.
