The Iron hit their goalscoring stride as they defeated Sheffield Wednesday 4-2 in the Carling Cup second round at Glanford Park on Tuesday night.

Michael Collins' spectacular strike just before half-time set the scene, before Chris Dagnall added a second moments after the break.

Michael O'Connor made it three from the penalty spot after Richard Hinds was sent off for felling Jonathan Forte, before Marcus Tudgay pulled one back with a spot-kick for the Owls.

Dagnall headed in a fourth to seal the result, before the away team pulled another back through Neil Mellor.

United made two changes entering the match, as Martyn Woolford (minor knee injury sustained in training) and Jim McNulty (ankle injury picked up at QPR at the weekend) both missed out, so Michael Collins and captain Cliff Byrne came back into the side.

Joe Murphy started in goal, with captain Byrne, Michael Raynes, Niall Canavan and Eddie Nolan forming the defence.

The midfield consisted of O'Connor Sam Togwell, Josh Wright and Collins, while Dagnall partnered Forte in attack.

The substitutes were Sam Slocombe, Andrew Wright, Rory Coleman, youth team captain (and defender) Ashley Palmer, Bobby Grant, Matt Godden and Adam Boyes.

The game got off to a slow start with neither side really taking control, although Togwell had a shot deflected  just wide after receiving Collins' cross on four minutes.

From the subsequent corner, Raynes' header cleared the crossbar.

The Owls had their first real chance on 20 minutes when Clinton Morrison headed over the crossbar from a Chris Sedgwick left-wing cross.

Soon after, Morrison hooked a volley over the crossbar as Wednesday began to get more of a grip on the game.

Dagnall broke for United on 28 minutes and was brought down by Mark Beevers on the edge of the area. The Owls defender was only booked though and Michael O'Connor's subsequent free-kick was saved.

Scunthorpe started to come into their stride but weren't creating too many chances still. On the break, Paul Heffernan skied a shot over the crossbar for the Owls on 38 minutes from close range.

Owls goalkeeper Nicky Weaver was drawn into a save from Raynes' near post header after O'Connor's corner from the left wing - tipping over the crossbar.

Just before the break, O'Connor played Forte through down the left but the attacker was tackled by Jon Otsemobor before he could fire the trigger.

Nevertheless, in the first minute of stoppage time, Collins scored in style - receiving the ball from just inside the area and curling it high and beyond the dive of Weaver, and into the back of the net and he celebrated his first strike for the club.

Scunthorpe continued as they left off soon after the break, and Forte flashed a drive just wide of goal.

United got their second goal on 49 minutes though when Dagnall superbly jinked his way into space on the edge of the area and drilled into Weaver's bottom right-hand corner for his first goal in claret and blue.

There was a triple substitution made by the Owls as they seeked a way back into the game.

In the 62nd minute, Nolan very nearly made it three as he curled an effort from the left hand side of the area against the inside of the post, and it cannoned back into play.

A few minutes later Scunthorpe were handed the opportunity to go three goals up when Forte was bundled down in the penalty area by Richard Hinds after Dagnall's header across goal, and the former Iron man was shown a straight red card.

Michael O'Connor duly stepped up to rifle past Weaver and further his side's lead with his first goal of the season.

Forte soon came off to be replaced by Grant as boss Nigel Adkins rested his frontman.

The Owls had a chance to pull a goal back not long after though as Byrne felled Neil Mellor in the area and Tudgay stepped up to convert the spot-kick to reduce the deficit.

Not long after, Nolan fizzed a shot over the crossbar from the left side of the area as the hosts continued to dominate, while Andrew Wright replaced O'Connor.

The Iron managed to make it four on 81 minutes as Dagnall beat the offside trap to send a superb header beyond Weaver from Byrne's cross for his second goal of the game.

The visitors pulled one back just minutes later as Mellor crashed in from just inside the area after Daniel Jones' cross found him in the area.

Boyes replaced Dagnall for his first competitive appearance with just three minutes left as the hosts managed to close the game out.

Scunthorpe deserved their win and are next in action on Saturday when they host Crystal Palace in the Championship.

Attendance: 4,680 (1,860 away).
