Scunthorpe had a late Martyn Woolford goal to thank as they drew 1-1 with Leicester City at Glanford Park on Saturday afternoon.
Martyn Waghorn's goal on three minutes appeared decisive as United struggled to get going as an attacking force against the Championship's third-placed Foxes.
However, substitute Woolford struck in the final minute out of three in stoppage time to secure a vital point for Nigel Adkins' side.
The Iron made four changes from the side that lost at Watford heading into the game. Joe Murphy returned from suspension and came in for Josh Lillis between the sticks, while Michael O'Connor and Grant McCann returned to the midfield in place of Matt Sparrow and Woolford.
Marcus Williams replaced George Friend at left-back, meanwhile. Cliff Byrne, David Mirfin, Rob Jones and Williams formed the full defence, with the midfield consisting of O'Connor, Sam Togwell, Josh Wright and McCann. Paul Hayes partnered Gary Hooper up front.
Lillis, Andrew Wright, Garry Thompson, Jonathan Forte, Woolford, Niall Canavan and Friend were the substitutes.
In the first minute the Foxes had their first chance of the match, as Andy King drilled a strike just wide, and they were to score with their next chance in the third minute when Waghorn latched on to a throughball from ex-Iron Jack Hobbs and struck past the onrushing Murphy.
Shortly after a drilled low effort by Yann Kermorgant from Matty Fryatt's cross forced Murphy into a low save.
The first home chance arrived on 12 minutes when Byrne's header went over the crossbar following McCann's corner.
The game went through a quiet spell until the 25th minute when Hooper had the ball in the net, turning sharply after Wright's knockdown to strike the ball past Weale. However, the goal was ruled out for offside - cutting short the celebrations.
On 38 minutes Murphy was drawn into a sublime reactionary stop from Kermorgant's bullet header as the visiting side, who were well on top, threatened to double their advantage.
That proved to be the last chance of the first half and Scunthorpe continued to be flat going forward in the opening half. They made their first change on 55 minutes when Togwell was replaced by Woolford.
The first shot on target from United of the afternoon arrived on 60 minutes when McCann's drilled effort was stopped by Weale.
Shortly after he curled a free-kick over the crossbar from 25 yards as the hosts continued to struggle in front of goal.
Chances were few and far between, and City defender Wayne Brown was winning every ball in the air sent into the box, while the away team were quick on the break. Getting the early goal suited them.
Thompson came on for Hayes in the 72nd minute as the home side seeked a fresh impetus going forward.
There could have been a levelling goal when Woolford flicked through Thompson, who burst into the area down the left and sent the ball across for Hooper, but the ball couldn't quite reach the forward.
Three minutes of stoppage time were indicated, with Jones' header well stopped by Weale.
But Woolford was to strike right at the end after some heavy pressure to strike the ball across Weale and into the back of the net for his fourth goal of the season.
It arrests a four game losing run as Scunthorpe head into next week's live televised home game with Coventry on Sunday.
Attendance: 6,884 (1,830 away).
Iron Bar and sponsors' man of the match: Joe Murphy.
