Scunthorpe showed fantastic character to record a famous win over fallen giants Newcastle United in front of the biggest crowd in Glanford Park's history.

The Iron went ahead through Martyn Woolford early in the second half but Kevin Nolan soon notched a leveller.

Nevertheless, United recovered from that setback to clinch the win 11 minutes from time as Woolford smashed in his second.

Winger Woolford returned to the side for the big game. The former York wideman came into the side in place of the suspended Michael O'Connor, partnering Grant McCann, Sam Togwell and Josh Wright in midfield.

Joe Murphy started the game in goal, with the defence consisting of Cliff Byrne, David Mirfin, Rob Jones and Marcus Williams.

Paul Hayes and Gary Hooper led the hosts' attack.

Glanford Park was sold out for the encounter with the Magpies and the stadium quickly filled up once the gates opened an hour and a half before kick-off. 8,921 fans filled the stadium to beat a record set over two years ago when Nottingham Forest visited in League One.

There was plenty of noise ahead of kick-off too as Scunthorpe tried to claim a famous win.

The first real action of the game arrived in the fifth minute when Sanchez Jose Enrique's cross was powered towards goal by the head of Nolan, and Murphy superbly tipped the ball wide.

Two minutes later the first Iron opportunity came the way of Hayes who poked a shot just over the crossbar after he seemed surprised to receive the ball.

It was the away team having the better possession going forward during the early stages as Nolan came close just moments after the Hayes chance but as he again tested Murphy with a back heel from close range that a combination of Murphy and the upright managed to get clear.

Hooper could have put his team ahead on 16 minutes but crashed his powerful strike over the crossbar after a scramble in the away area.

Although the visitors had pressed in the third of the game there was a quiet lull in play until the half-hour mark when Woolford prodded an effort just wide of goal after good work from Hayes and McCann.

Shortly after McCann and Togwell linked up well with the former playing through the latter but Togwell's shot was well stopped by Steve Harper.

Nolan, always a threat in the area, fired over the crossbar from 15 yards in the 38th minute after good wing play down the left by Jonas Gutierrez had set him up.

Shortly before half-time, Woolford struck wide after Jones had headed down Josh Wright's free-kick.

Then, just moments after, Murphy sprawled to his left to superbly tip out Carroll's low effort.

The first notable chance of the second period came the way of United five minutes into the second half as Hooper crashed a powerful strike into the side-netting.

Two minutes later though Woolford fired the hosts ahead as Hooper latched on to a long ball and held the ball up well before setting the former York man up to strike past Harper and into the back of the net.

The visiting side chased a way back into the game as Carroll struck wide after being forced to fire from an angle and Geremi struck over.

Nolan crashed the Magpies back level in the 64th minute when he got on the end of a cross from Danny Guthrie and netted past a beaten Murphy.

The Iron seeked to regain the lead and the next chance they had came soon after Nolan's goal as McCann curled a free-kick low and wide of goal.

The pressure continued from the away side and it was a case of Scunthorpe trying to ride the storm.

In an effort to inject fresh legs into the attack, Jonathan Forte came on for Hooper in the 79th minute and a goal came seconds later as Woolford latched on to Togwell's flick-on with an injection of pace and rammed the ball past Harper for his second of the night.

As you would expect, it was mostly one-way traffic from Newcastle towards the end but Scunthorpe were holding firm. Woolford was replaced by Thompson in the 89th minute as Scunthorpe added some fresh legs.

Four minutes of added time were indicated by the fourth official and Forte very nearly added a killer third for Scunthorpe as he charged through down the left. He had plenty of time to strike past Harper but he fired his shot just wide of the stopper's left-hand post.

Andrew Wright came on for McCann in the dying stages as the Iron continued to fight for dear life to hold on - and they managed to do so, as they clinched a second successive home win.

Nigel Adkins' side are next in action on Saturday when they travel to Peterborough United.
