NOT THE BEST WEEK
Posted on: Wed 20 Aug 2008
Can't say the last week has been the best in the history of Scunthorpe United. Injuries galore, two abject performances, second bottom of the table and virtually no fit centre backs at the club.
The performance against Hartlepool in the cup was nothing short of terrible from first minute to last - no-one came out of it with any real credit in my opinion. Don't get me wrong, Hartlepool are a good team - but we should be winning these games shouldn't we?
Moving on to Walsall - it was a case of sublime to the ridiculous. Garry Thompson had his best game in a Scunthorpe shirt, scoring the opener then doing a great job for the team after that.
David Mirfin of course was signed for a lot of money last week, and his debut ended not long after it had started with his deserved red card. It was always going to be difficult with 10 men, but Walsall are rubbish and should still have been beaten. They will be near the bottom come the end of the season, and if we don't improve quickly we are in danger of keeping them company.
So, onwards and upwards, a home game this week, but a difficult one against Peterborough. The task has not been made any easier by the fact that Kenny Milne is out until Christmas, Izzy Iriekpen is out for god knows how long and Andy Crosby is not fit enough to play.
So, the only fit centre back on the books is Cliff Byrne, but at least a new loan face has been brought in with Krystian Pearce signing on loan from Birmingham. I have seen this guy play a couple of times for England Under 19's and I personally think he is going to be a very good player, but I would rather have seen an experienced head being brought it for a month to help steady the ship. Still, I would be delighted if he came in and filled the void and showed maturity beyond his 18 years - but what a baptism of fire for him!
It really is important to get a result this week, and the best way in my opinion is to play on the front foot - with the best form of defence being attacking the opposition and all that!
There are so many attacking players in the squad, I think we should go all out, and its time to give Jonathan Forte a start with Paul Hayes out injured - especially after his hat-trick in the reserves in midweek.
Crucially of course Joe Murphy is back. No offence to Josh Lillis - he has done a good job, but Joe is the best keeper in this league and having him back is a massive boost.
Things can't get any worse, and I think its important we get behind the lads this weekend and hopefully that can help get the season up and running. Another defeat will leave lots of questions needing answers.
