The Iron's youth team emerged 3-0 victors at Barton Town Old Boys in their second game of pre-season on Saturday.

Jamie Wootton scored the opener in the first half, running on to a throughball and then slotting home.

Zak Cowling then added the second in impressive style, working really hard to regain possession high up the pitch before slotting home.

Scunthorpe were two goals up at half-time and then added a third when first year trainee Connor Smythe crossed the ball for Wootton at the far post, who put his header past the goalkeeper.

It's now three goals in two games for Wootton, who also notched in Tuesday night's 2-1 loss to Appleby-Frodingham.

"Jamie has got good pace and we've been working with the strikers, trying to teach them when to make their runs," said youth development officer Tony Daws.

"Jamie has got through a couple of times and is a good finisher, and now has three goals in two games so far this pre-season."

Talking about the manner of the win, Daws added: "Barton are quite a good side, and a league higher than Appleby-Frodingham, who we played on Tuesday night.

"However, I thought we did very well.

"We started really well and passed the ball nice and sharply. We moved it around and caused them no end of problems with the movement in our team.

"The boys set a really high standard in terms of how we played technically and also how hard we worked physically - on and off the ball.

"They have set a standard now which we want them to aspire to every game."
