YOUTHS DRAW AT LINCOLN MOORLANDS

24 July 2012

United's youth team drew 2-2 at Lincoln Moorlands in their third friendly of pre-season on Tuesday night.

Scunthorpe took the lead on eight minutes when striker Jamie Wootton got free on the left-hand side and squared the ball back to Zak Cowling, who scored.

"We kept possession really well in the first half and just needed to speed our passing up a little bit because the grass was dry and slowing it down," youth development officer Tony Daws told Scunthorpe-United.co.uk.

"We got the ball down well, passed it well and still created plenty of opportunities."

Lincoln equalised from a corner on 29 minutes. Scunthorpe had defended well against the first ball in but didn't clear it sufficiently and a shot went in from the edge of the box.

"We probably should have closed it down quicker," added Daws.

In the second half, United made nine changes and had a team made up mostly of U16's.

The Iron did go 2-1 up on the hour mark though when Kyle Wooton got down the side of the box, making a really good run, and pulled the ball back for Curtis Bateson, who arrived on the edge of the box to smash home from 20 yards.

"It was a cracking goal," said Daws.

Scunthorpe conceded from a free-kick though in the closing stages though, as the ball was initially cleared before the hosts scored.

"Again, we weren't quick enough to close it down and they scored from it," continued the youth team coach.

"I'm very pleased though because in the second half we were basically a team of schoolboys.

"We played some good football again and basically we're trying to mirror the style of the first team.

"We did cause a lot of problems for the opposition too with our passing and movement.

"They were another mens' team that we played, and they play at quite a high standard.

"It was a good test against a decent side who play a good level of football.

"It was boiling hot too, which had an impact on things because the pitch was a bit dry as well.

"We were full of confidence from Saturday after a good performance (and win) at Barton though."

Daws added: "The lads enjoyed the game at Lincoln and it's good to play against men because it's a really physical challenge for us.

"To be honest though, we could have probably won the game."

The junior side's pre-season preparations continue with an away trip to Lincoln United on Saturday.
