YOUTHS BEAT YORK 2-0

27 March 2015

The Iron's youth team beat their York City counterparts 2-0 at Winterton on Friday afternoon.

United scored both their goals in the first half and had a further strike disallowed.

Scunthorpe played really well, particularly in the first half.

After 15 minutes, trialist George Barmby put a cross in to the far post and Sonny Shilling headed against the woodwork.

On 18 minutes, former Derby academt product Barmby gave the Iron the lead. He used pace to beat a defender on the left side of the box and fired a strike into the back of the net.

Scunthorpe scored again on 35 minutes, as Jack Dyche sent a cross in for Harry Gibbons, another U16 trialist, and he scored a good goal, sidefooting home at the near post.

At that point, the hosts were comfortable and controlling the game.

In the second half, York started to get more into the game and stepped up their level of performance.

United saw off the pressure, and a had chance late on.

"The pleasing thing was, the first half performance was really good, and we kept a clean sheet," explained academy manager Tony Daws.

"That was our first clean sheet for a number of games.

"We had a young side out. I had four U16 trialists playing who we had to make a decision on regarding next season, whether we're going to sign them as apprentices.

"We had a very young side out, with only two second year apprentices starting the game. It was a good performance and result."
