WILCOX HAILS LLERA DISPLAY

28 July 2014

United manager Russ Wilcox has hailed trialist Miguel Llera’s performance following the 1-0 pre-season friendly win over Huddersfield Town on Saturday.

The centre-back is currently without a club but impressed during the game against the Terriers as Wilcox ponders over boosting his options in defence.

Llera played the full 90 minutes despite arriving at Glanford Park less than two hours before kick-off and Wilcox was pleased with how the Spaniard performed.

“I’m hoping everybody was impressed with him,” he told The Iron Player.

“He’s a very experienced defender and he’s played 71 games in the Championship in the last two seasons so he’s a good player.

“He’s full of experience and I thought he used that well against Huddersfield.

“I thought he looked very calm with the ball, his positional play was outstanding, he’s got a good presence about him and he seems a smashing lad.

“It was difficult for him because he only walked through the door at 1:30pm on Saturday but he introduced himself to the boys and went out there and produced an excellent performance.”

Wilcox won’t be rushing into a decision regarding the 34-year-old and will be speaking to club chairman Peter Swann in due course about the situation.

The former MK Dons, Charlton and Sheffield Wednesday player is also known for his ability from dead ball situations and has a knack of chipping in regularly on the score sheet.

“We’ll have a chat and see where we are with the situation,” Wilcox added.

“I’ll obviously speak to the chairman first and foremost to see where we are and we’ll see what the player’s thoughts are.

“He showed against Huddersfield what he’s about and he’s a top class defender.

“I’ve seen him play many a time and he’s always impressed me.

“He’s played 71 games in the last two seasons in the Championship with seven goals to boot so he’s good in both boxes.”
