WE NEEDED TO SHOW MORE QUALITY

24 February 2015

United manager Mark Robins bemoaned his side for not having enough finesse in the final third, following their 1-0 defeat at home to Barnsley.

The Iron missed the opportunity to make it three home wins on the bounce when the managerless Tykes came to Glanford Park, despite a period of dominance in the second half.

“Disappointing, absolutely disappointing,” said the manager when he gave his verdict to The Iron Player.

“We didn’t have enough quality to get anything from the game and we are better than that. We weren’t as good as we have been and we got what we deserved.

“The disappointment is you go ninth in League One if you win the game, but for whatever reason it was not to be.”

The visitors took the lead on 51 minutes when they capitalised on a defensive error and Josh Scowen dispatched neatly. Despite being reduced to ten men, the Reds held on as goalkeeper Adam Davies was on hand to make some outstanding saves.

He added: “We created a lot of opportunities, for the first 20 minutes we had four or five chances to take the lead but we didn’t and if we don’t take our chances, it is likely you’re going to concede a horrendous goal like that and we did.

“You have to credit Barnsley to a degree because they stuck to their task and managed to grind a result out.

“We were knocking on the door all second half and they went down to ten men and we created loads of opportunities and got the ball in the box loads of times.”

A quick turnaround means the Claret and Blue can make amends when they host Yeovil Town on Saturday, a match where they can make it three wins from their last four at home.

Robins concluded: “From my perspective we didn’t have enough quality even though we put them under a lot of pressure.

“For whatever reason, we took too many touches or made the wrong decision, passed the wrong ball at the wrong time and that was the frustration. We have better players than that.”
