WE NEED TO BE MORE CLINICAL

4 April 2013

United manager Brian Laws feels the Iron will have to overcome their Achilles heel of clinical finishing if they are to pull away from the bottom four.

The Iron travel to Lancashire this weekend where they face striker Akpo Sodje's former club Preston North End.

Laws - who started the Scunthorpe striker on the bench for the match against Bournemouth - feels the ex-Preston striker will come back to haunt his old club.

The United boss told The Iron Player: "You never know, we have seen it many a time before, when a player returns to their old club it always seems to bring out the best in them.

"I felt the strategy was the right thing to do by staring Sodje on the bench and we have got to use him wisely and we have Preston - his former club this weekend - and I am sure he will be well up for that."

Despite the United number nine only playing a small cameo in the game on Monday, Laws still believes he has a wide selection of players that can lead the line, even if they are not a natural born striker.

Mark Duffy partnered Karl Hawley for the Easter Monday match with Bournemouth and Laws felt he gave a good account of himself in a position that is unfamiliar to him.

He added: "At times I thought he was very good. He created some very good opportunities but that one time when he got through on goal he just chose the wrong option.

"I suppose that is the difference really. His work rate was very good and he is an option for us up front because he is capable of hurting teams."

Laws' side have been creating numerous chances in recent weeks, however, they have struggled to muster a way through the opposing defence and that is something that the United manager believes has hampered their season.

He said: "I suppose that has been our Achilles heel all season. It is no good creating two or three chances and not finishing any of them, we need to finish at least one of them if we are going to be in with a chance of winning any game."

He added: "We create the chances but we are just lacking that cutting edge when it comes to finishing."

The United manager knew that Eddie Howe's Bournemouth would pose a strong threat to the Iron all afternoon and that is why he chose the tactics he did.

Laws said: "I thought we needed to get the ball on the ground a lot on the day and start running at Bournemouth and then bring on the big physical guys that we can use in the later stages of the game."

With just under 20 minutes of the match remaining Laws withdrew Anthony Forde and Hawley in favour of a stronger attack to see if they could break down the Cherries defence. However, it was to no avail.

Since his return to the club Laws has included several youth team players. In recent weeks, central midfielder Luke Hornsey has been given the opportunity to spend time with the first team.

In the past Jamie Wootton and Hakeeb Adelakun have both featured on the Iron bench this season and Laws believes that these players have a bright future with the football club.

However, despite including them on the substitutes bench, he believes it would be unfair to throw them on in games as they have no experience of being in a relegation battle.

Laws said: "It is great experience for them just being on the bench but we have to remember that they are jumping up from the youth team. They have not had any under 21 games or anything so if we chuck them straight into the first team it is a big ask.

"I will be looking at them next year and they will need to be involved in and around the place a lot more so they understand what goes on."

He added: "If they get on the pitch or not is a different matter, they can learn a lot from just being a part of the squad."
