Manager Mark Robins was disappointed to see Barnsley beat his side for the second time in a cup competition this season.
Charlie Goode’s late consolation wasn’t enough for the Iron as they bowed out of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy thanks to goals from Lewin Nyatanga and Marley Watkins – with the United boss switching full attention to Saturday’s match against Blackpool on Saturday.“It’s the same again really,” he told The Iron PlayerHD.
“We’ve passed the ball okay up until the final third and made some not so great decisions when we’ve had chances to score. We’ve got to be better when we get into those positions.
“I picked a young forward line with Tom Hopper and Kyle Wootton, with Hakeeb Adelakun just behind them. We got into some decent positions but couldn’t quite capitalise and get the opening goal. We then went down to ten men and they got a corner and we didn’t see it out."
Jack King was off the pitch receiving treatment at the time the deadlock was broken and required three stitches in a head injury, with his lengthy treatment being the reason for his withdrawal.
“The timing of the goal was poor from our point of view and we’re disappointed,” he continued.
“Jack King required three stitches in his head and we had to make a decision based on what was coming through. He hadn’t even got one stitch in at the time, but the ball stayed in play for a while so we couldn’t make the change and Jack came back as we’d just made the change.
“It wasn’t the most attractive game. It was a little bit dull.
“We’ve created enough chances to score, but made poor decisions in the final third and conceded two really sloppy and poor goals.
“Charlie Goode has got on the end of another cross and got another goal which is great and Kevin van Veen has had a couple of chances and hit the outside of the post with a header, and we’ve also had other chances to score.
“I’ve got every faith in the players. We have to be ruthless and we have to be honest; tonight that wasn’t good enough and we will regroup for Saturday. We want the players to learn on the job while trying to get the results.”
