WAYSIDE 0-1 IRON

19 July 2012

United were 1-0 victors away at Wayside Celtic in their second friendly of pre-season on Thursday night.

The game was Scunthorpe's final one of their tour of Ireland, with the squad set for a return to England on Friday.

Trialist Mark Hughes scored the winning goal in the first half following a great counter-attack.

It was a more youthful Scunthorpe line-up that started the game, as the substitutes in Tuesday night's 1-0 win over Bray Wanderers received more game time.

Trialists Hughes, Tom Newey, Matty Mainwaring, Jordan Keegan and 'Yani' were also involved.

Assistant boss Chris Brass told Scunthorpe-United.co.uk: "It's another win for us and it's really pleasing.

"For the goal we broke from a corner and got up the other end, and the ball got to the trialist in the box who finished it well.

"We gave the lads who finished the game on Tuesday 55-60 minutes before bringing on the other guys.

"It was a good run-out for us, and it's been a good week in Ireland overall.

"We've kept a clean sheet in both games. That foundation was set in the latter part of last season and it's nice to see it continuing.

"It's pre-season, it's a work in progress but things are going well and we know exactly where we're at.

"The group have bonded well over the course of the last week.

"The weather has been kind, the facilities have been good, as has the hospitality and overall we're pleased.

"We're looking forward now to getting back home and upping it a little bit more before we face Grimsby Town on Tuesday night.

Niall Canavan started the game and has no reaction to the knee injury which ruled him out the other night.

Damien Mozika wasn't involved though, as an ankle injury kept him sidelined.

The players will have a training session on Friday morning before returning home.
