Striker Kevin van Veen says he is ready to push on next season as United look to progress too.
The Dutchman was on the scoresheet alongside good friend Hakeeb Adelakun as the Iron suffered a derby day defeat at Doncaster on Sunday, and he shared his opinions on some crucial moments in the game that didn’t go our way.“I thought the game was really disappointing for us,” Kevin shared.
“It was a terrible performance from us in the first half, and perhaps a little bit better in the second but still not good. It was a bad ending to the season for us.
“It wasn’t about what Doncaster did, it just wasn’t us today. If we played good football then we would have won the game. The referee also made some very strange decisions like the foul on me from the keeper was a red card and a penalty for sure.
“He explained to me that he let McSheffrey take the shot and that was why he didn’t give it, so maybe if Gary wasn’t there it would have been 1-1 and they would have had 10 men.”
It’s been a topsy-turvy campaign for us this season, a rollercoaster ride KVV only got on at the end of January, but he believes in his short time at the club he can tell the quality of his team-mates is certainly not of a side fighting to stay in the division.
“We are much better than relegation fighters with a much better squad," he stated.
“This season was not with us and after the Chesterfield game we dropped off with six or seven games without wins. Next season we need to be ready, but I believe our team is good enough to be top five.
“We need to defend better, and that starts from the top with us strikers.”
Talking about his own game now, Kevin’s first half a season in England has well and truly flown by, with his grand unveiling well over three months ago now. He rounded things off talking about how he’s taken to life in League One, and what targets he’s setting himself for the 2015/16 season.
He stated: “English football is more physical and it is faster, but the level I played in is technically higher. For me it was about adapting to a new game, and now the season is over I have to get myself ready.
“I have already put on 3kg of muscle to help my strength, and next season I have to be good and show my qualities.
“This so far is not what I can do, so next year I have to be ready and give all I have and be better than this. Next season I want to get at least 15 goals, but if I don’t reach that but still play well it is okay, but I am a striker, I like scoring goals.”
